Brabham retired at the end of 1970, leaving the team under control of his partner and designer, Ron Tauranac, who eventually sold his controlling interest to the team's present owner, Bernie Ecclestone. Ecclestone hired the talented South African designer, Gordon Murray, who designed the neat BT 42 ('BT' representing Brabham and Tauranac) and additional improvements and developments led to the BT 44 and BT 44B. The BT 42/44 type featured a triangular-shaped chassis to blend with the sloping edges of the Ford V8 engine.
